SplitHappens at a glance

SplitHappens is a free app for iPhone and Android that helps friends, couples, flatmates and travel groups split shared expenses fairly. The app works out who owes whom how much and nets everything against each other, so you need as few transfers as possible at the end.

  • An expense in seconds: Amount, what for, who was there, who paid. Split equally or enter custom amounts.
  • Scan a receipt: Take a photo and the AI reads the items, prices and tip. Everyone takes what they had and pays only for that.
  • Groups: For trips, flatshares or festivals. All expenses in one place, settled at the end with as few payments as possible.
  • One balance per person: The home screen shows one amount for each person, netted across all expenses and groups.
  • Guests without the app: People without the app join by name and get their share via a link.
  • Settling up: See the other person's PayPal or bank details with one tap, record the payment, done. No money moves through the app.
  • More than 30 currencies: For trips, converted into the group currency.
  • Privacy: Servers in Germany, no ads, no ad tracking. Languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian.

Getting started

Is SplitHappens really free?

Yes. No ads, no in-app purchases and no subscription. Every feature is available right away.

Which devices does SplitHappens run on?

On iPhone from iOS 15.5 and on Android phones. Get it on the App Store or Google Play. There is no web version to sign in to. Guests can still see their share in the browser, no app needed.

How do I sign up?

With email and password, with Google, or with Apple on iPhone. After signing in you set up your profile in two short steps. A sample expense then shows you how splitting works.

How do I add an expense?

Tap "+ Expense" on the home screen. Enter the amount, what it was for, who was there and who paid. Before you save, you can already see who owes whom. You can also add an expense straight from a person's or a group's page, and they are already selected.

Expenses & receipts

How can I split an expense?

In three ways:

  • Equally: The amount is shared evenly among everyone who was there.
  • Custom amounts: You enter how much falls on each person.
  • By items: You scan the receipt or type in the items, and everyone gets what they had.

The person who paid doesn't have to be the one entering the expense. So you can also record that Sarah paid.

How do I assign items?

Open the expense and tap an item. You can take it yourself, give it to someone else, or split it between several people, say a pizza for two. Everyone who was there can help, and everyone sees changes right away. Items nobody has taken yet show as "open" until someone does.

How does scanning a receipt work?

Take a photo of the receipt or pick one from your gallery. The AI recognises the items, prices, shop, date, currency and tip. You check everything before saving and can change any line.

It works best with restaurant bills and supermarket receipts. Lay the receipt flat, make sure the light is good and the whole receipt is in the picture. Handwritten or badly crumpled receipts don't always work, so then you fix things by hand or just enter the total. If the scan got something wrong, tap "Result not correct?". That helps us improve it.

How do tips and deposits work?

Enter the tip as an amount or just type the new total. With "Split automatically" the app spreads it across the items people have taken, so whoever had more also tips more. Bottle deposits or discounts go in as an item with a minus sign and are subtracted.

Can I change an expense later?

Yes. Whoever created or paid for the expense can change the title, amount, currency, payer and participants, and in a group the organizers can too. Everyone who was there can take or add items. When an expense has been changed, the others see a small pencil. If you've already settled up with someone involved, the app points that out.

Can I add expenses in other currencies?

Yes, more than 30 currencies. Every expense has its own currency. In a group the app converts everything into the group currency, so at the end you see one amount per person. Expenses outside a group stay in their currency, and amounts in different currencies are shown separately. You set your default currency in your profile.

Groups

When is a group worth it?

Whenever several expenses belong together: a holiday, a weekend away, a flatshare or a festival. In a group you collect all expenses and settle up once at the end. For a single restaurant bill you don't need a group. If you often spend money with the same people, the app suggests turning them into a group.

How do I create a group and invite others?

Tap "+ New group" on the home screen, enter a name and pick an icon. Add members right away or later. Others join themselves via a link or QR code. Guests without the app can be members too.

How does a group settle up at the end?

Everyone records in the group what they paid. In the "Balances" tab the app shows who pays whom, with as few transfers as possible. Instead of six separate payments between four people, three are often enough. Whoever pays taps "Pay". Whoever receives money can confirm it with "Payment received". Every expense in a group starts with all members included. Anyone who wasn't there is deselected and pays nothing for it.

What can organizers do?

Whoever creates the group has full rights and can make other members organizers. Organizers can edit the group, add and remove members, change any expense in the group and close the group.

What happens when I close a group?

The group disappears from the home screen and stays available under "All groups". All balances in the group are set to zero: whatever was still open counts as settled, even if nobody paid. So settle up first on anything that really still needs paying. You can restore a closed group, but the old open amounts don't come back.

People & guests

How do I add friends?

Via "Invite someone" on the home screen. Send a link or show a QR code that the other person scans with their phone. The link is valid for 30 days and works as often as you like. Anyone who shares an expense or group with you is in your list of people anyway.

Can I split costs with people who don't have the app?

Yes. Guests join any expense and any group by name, without the app and without signing up. Under "Who was there?" tap "Add a new person". After saving, "Let them know" offers to send the guest their share as a message with a link.

The link opens a page in the browser with all of the guest's open amounts. It is valid for 30 days, and a new link replaces the old one. Payment details like bank account or PayPal are not shown there, so the guest asks you directly. If a guest creates an account later, the link lets them bring all their expenses along.

What does the amount next to a person mean?

That's your balance: everything open between the two of you, netted across all expenses and groups. Below it you see "you get" or "you pay", depending on who owes whom. On the person's page you see the full history, with the balance after every expense and every payment.

Settling up & paying

Does SplitHappens make real payments?

No. SplitHappens works out who owes whom. You pay outside the app, by bank transfer, PayPal or cash. Then you record the payment with one tap, and the other person gets a notification.

How do I record a payment?

Open the person and tap "Pay". The open amount is already filled in, but you can change it if you only pay part. If you received money, tap "Payment received". If you want to waive the rest, there's "Let off the rest". The app nets the payment against all open expenses and groups between you.

I recorded a payment wrong. What now?

You'll find all payments in the "Activity" tab. Tap the payment to change or delete it.

Who can see my bank details or PayPal?

You add payment details in your profile under "Payment methods". They are stored encrypted on our server. Only people you're connected with can see them: your friends, people in your expenses and in your active groups. They see them when they pay you. They never appear on the guest page.

Account & privacy

Where is my data stored?

On our own server at Hetzner in Germany, GDPR compliant. No ads, no ad tracking, no selling of data. You can turn off crash reports and anonymous usage statistics under Profile → Settings → Privacy. More in the privacy policy.

Who can see my expenses?

Only the people involved in an expense, and for groups, the group members.

Can I export my data?

Yes. Under Profile → Export data you get your expenses as a CSV file, for example for a spreadsheet. You can also download all your stored data there as a JSON file.

How do I delete my account?

In the app under Profile → Delete account, or on the delete account page. Your data is deleted. In shared expenses only your name remains, so that everyone else's amounts stay correct.

Troubleshooting

I'm not getting notifications.

First check in your phone's settings that SplitHappens is allowed to send notifications. In the app you can switch individual kinds of notifications on and off under Profile → Notifications. On Android, battery saving settings sometimes stop notifications from arriving.

I can't get into my account.

If you signed up with Google or Apple, use the same way again. With email and password, tap "Forgot password?" on the sign-in screen and you'll get an email with a link. If no email arrives, check your spam folder.

The AI didn't recognise my receipt.

Try again with good light, the receipt lying flat and no shadows. For very long receipts it helps to photograph only the part with the items. If it still doesn't work, type in the items by hand or just split the total. With "Result not correct?" you send us the receipt so we can improve the recognition.
